Stoked On: Marilyn Minter

As an artist, I make it a point to view a lot of other people’s art. But, only occasionally do I come across work that actually excites me and gets my mind racing in all sorts of inspired directions.

This short video, “Green Pink Caviar”, from artist, Marilyn Minter, had that effect on me.

Bold, colorful, sexy and succinct with a nice ambient soundtrack. Beats the heck out of the glut of garbage I’m subjected to on YouTube.

Marilyn’s luscious photography tickles the pleasure center of the brain.

While there is tons of amazing art in the world, I’m mostly drawn to the work that answers these two questions:

1) Do I wish I created it?
2) Do I wish it was on my walls at home?

I answer a resounding, “YES!” when I see the work of Marilyn Minter. Color me inspired.

Stoked On: The Limousines

Heard the song “Very Busy People” by quirky, Bay Area duo, The Limousines, a few days ago and the bouncy, distorted chorus has been stuck in my head ever since.

Sex, drugs and rock ‘n roll? Not this time. More like video games, anti-depressants and social media. This upbeat dance track is a perfect slacker anthem for the mySpace generation.

The Bay Area’s Limousines formed over Instant Messenger and has gone from nonchalant file swapping via email and GarageBand laptop demos to full-on collaboration creating sticky, whimsical tunes in a grown up studio.

Challenging the typical concept of a “band”, yet still crafting perfectly memorable electro-pop gems gives me good reason to be Stoked On This: The Limousines, “Very Busy People”.

Shiny Toy Guns

Over a year ago, a friend of mine mentioned a cool band she had heard. But she’s one of those people who always messes up names, so she called ‘em something like Bright Plastic Pistols, and I was all, “Whatevs.”

Flash forward to last night: Zippin’ the Beamer down Interstate 5, a song called “Ghost Town” comes on Sirius satellite radio and my Stoke-O-Meter goes through the freakin’ (moon)roof!

“Who IS this?!”, I demand. And, since the BM-Dub I’m driving is doper than K.I.T.T., it proceeds to tell me everything I need to know: Intense, four-piece band from L. A. with killer His and Hers vocals, swirley-’lectro-loops, sick keys and sound f/x, and ballsy hooks for days.

All that, plus a glam-tastic, future-shock, cyborg aesthetic that pleases my peepers and gets me totally Stoked On This: Shiny Toy Guns
